Independent living communities offer older adults the freedom and dignity of living independently in a vibrant, amenity-rich community without any of the worries or concerns about home ownership, maintenance or chores.
Who Can Benefit from Independent Living?
Independent living is ideal for healthy adults who want an active lifestyle, the privacy of their own home, and access to amenities such as housekeeping or meals that grant them the free time to enjoy life! Most seniors in independent living communities still drive and can manage activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.) independently.
Are All Independent Living Communities the Same?
No. There are different types of independent living communities that meet a variety of needs, including:
Affordable Senior Housing
Some independent living communities, like JHLC’s Zaban Tower , offer all the advantages and benefits of independent living, but the monthly rent is adjusted to meet fixed or lower incomes. Individuals must meet certain age and income requirements set by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in order to qualify for tenancy. Click here to learn more.
Independent Retirement Communities
In an independent or “retirement” community, individuals sign a rental agreement for a house or apartment and pay on a monthly basis. These communities offer many amenities, activities and conveniences for those typically 55+ years of age.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)
In a CCRC, seniors purchase an independent living residence instead of renting.
